Taking Fear Out Of Going To The Gym

Group of people at the gym looking very happyFeel like you want to start up a new workout program to kick off a healthier you in the year ahead but anxious about going to the gym?

If so, you’re in good company. Many people often fear hitting the gym, especially if it’s for the very first time. Whether this fear is routed in what others think of you, in your own comfort with your own body, or just in the fact that it’s a new place and you are unsure of what you should be doing, there are ways to get around this.

Let’s go over what you can do to take the fear out of going to the gym this coming year.

Schedule A Session With A Trainer

First, consider scheduling a session or two with a trainer. This is often the best way to take the fear out of it as the trainer will walk you through what you should be doing, while checking your form on each lift.

If your fear is directly associated with your lack of workout knowledge, this is the best way to get past it. 

Female Only Gyms

Next, you might also want to check for female only gyms if you’re a woman and simply feeling self-conscious about yourself around men at the gym. This can give you a peace of mind.

Likewise, if gender isn’t an issue but it’s those high level fitness enthusiasts that intimidate you, scout out the gym population before you sign up.

There are many gyms out there that tend to draw more beginner crowds which will be perfect for you.

Get A Training Buddy

If getting a personal trainer isn’t something you’re interested in, you might want to consider getting a training buddy instead. Find someone who you feel comfortable around who is also looking to improve their fitness from the ground level.

This way, you can learn together. You’ll feel more comfortable when you have a partner with you the whole time compared to when you’re alone.

Start Slow

Finally, be sure that you start slow. If your fear comes from the fact you associate the gym with pain and discomfort, make sure you don’t experience this. Only push yourself as far as you want to each session. This will help to build a more positive association into the future and get you hooked for good.

So keep these quick tips in mind if you fear hitting the gym in the New Year. There’s really nothing to be scared of as long as you approach it in the proper manner
